Unlike the other life cycles that were part of this unit, the white-tailed deer does not have a complete metamorphosis. The white-tailed deer does not have distinct changes that it will grow through as it changes an grows.
Stage 1: Fawn
When a deer is born and begins life it looks just like its mother. The baby deer is a much small representation of its parent but it has all the features of its parents. In this stage the baby deer is called a fawn. Soon after they are born they are able to walk and forge for food. They will depend on its mother for a while. When fawns are born they have white spots on their back to help camouflage them when the mother must leave it hidden in the woods.
Stage 2: Yearling
After about a year for males and two years for females they begin to venture out on their own. They are now called yearlings. They will loose their spots before the winter of its first year.
Stage 3: Adult
The males are called bucks. The females are called doe. The bucks leave their mother after 1 year and will begin to grown antlers when they are about 2 years old. They usually travel alone. The doe will stay with their mother for 2 years. The Doe will be ready to have a baby deer, and begin the cycle all over again, when she is about 2 years old.
